If you can’t get your head around the movements that occur at the shoulder joint, this video and blog will clearly explain it. This is everything you need to know about the shoulder joint and movements for your Level 2 or 3 Anatomy and physiology Exam
You’ll discover:
- The difference between the Shoulder Joint and the Shoulder Girdle
- All 9 movements that occur at the shoulder joint, with clear actions you can follow along.
- Three Example Mock Questions to test your knowledge
Shoulder Girdle or Shoulder Joint
There is a difference between the Shoulder Girdle and the Shoulder Joint, and you need to know this ready for your exam and when working with clients.
The Shoulder girdle is made up of the Scapula (shoulder blades) and Clavicle (collar bone)
However the Shoulder Joint is the ball and socket joint where the humerus articulates within the glenohumeral socket. This is the joint we are investigating in todays video training.
All joints are not made equally
Although the Hip and Shoulder Joints are both ball and socket joints, they are not made equally.
The hip joint is weight bearing and the shoulder joint is not
this makes the shoulder joint the most mobile joint in your body and can move around all three planes of movement:
Sagittal, Frontal and Transverse.

Flexion
Extension
Transverse Plane Movement:
Horizontal Flexion
Horizontal Extension
Frontal Plane Movement:
Adduction
Abduction
Transverse Plane Movement:
Internal Rotation
External Rotation
Multiplanar action:
Circumduction
