What Happens on a Level 2 Gym Instructor Course

What Happens on a Level 2 Gym Instructor Course?

Discover what really happens during the two practical days of a Level 2 Gym Instructor course, from your first workshop to coaching your first exercise.

You’ve probably seen the words “2-day practical course” when looking at Level 2 Gym Instructor qualifications.

But what does that actually mean?

Do you spend two days sitting in a classroom listening to someone talk about fitness?

Not with us.

At Parallel Coaching, the two practical days are designed to get you doing the job, not just listening to someone explain it.

So, what actually happens when you arrive at our Academy in Milton Keynes?

First things first: you meet your tutor and your group

Your first few minutes are about getting settled, meeting the tutors and getting to know the other people on your course.

And that matters.

Because for many people, this might be the first time they’ve ever trained to work in the fitness industry.

You don’t need to arrive already knowing how to coach exercises or feeling completely confident in a gym environment.

That’s what you’re here to learn.

Once everyone is settled, it’s time to get practical.

You don’t just learn about exercises. You practise them.

A big part of the two days is spent working with gym equipment and actually practising what you’ve been learning through your online study.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Demonstrate exercises clearly
  • Give effective instructions
  • Position yourself when coaching
  • Observe someone’s technique
  • Give useful feedback
  • Adapt your coaching when someone needs help
  • Communicate with different types of clients

Because knowing what a squat is isn’t the same as knowing how to teach someone to squat.

That’s an important difference.

The day is built around practical workshops

Rather than spending the whole day sitting down, the practical training is broken into workshops.

There are two practical workshops in the morning and two in the afternoon, giving you plenty of opportunities to put your learning into practice.

And this is where things start to feel very different from studying a qualification at home.

You’re not simply reading about exercise instruction.

You’re actually in the gym, practising exercise instruction.

Around 80–90% of the face-to-face training is practical, so you spend a lot of your time moving, coaching, observing and learning by doing.

And yes, you’ll actually coach someone

This is where many learners have that moment of:

“Ah… this is what being a Level 2 Gym Instructor is actually like.”

You might know exactly how an exercise should look when you’re watching somebody else demonstrate it.

But then it’s your turn.

You have to explain what to do, demonstrate it.

You have to watch the person in front of you and decide what feedback they need.

And if they don’t understand your explanation?

You need to find another way of explaining it.

That’s coaching.

And it’s something you can’t fully learn by sitting at home with a textbook.

What if you’ve never done anything like this before?

That’s completely fine.

A Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification is an entry-level qualification, so you’re not expected to arrive already knowing how to coach clients.

You are expected to be willing to learn, practise and improve.

You might feel slightly nervous when you first have to demonstrate or coach an exercise.

That’s normal.

In fact, that’s part of the learning process.

By practising in a supportive environment, you can start building the confidence to do something that might have felt completely unfamiliar when you first arrived.

There’s assessment too, but it’s not a traditional exam

Another question we get is:

“Do I have to sit an exam?”

The Level 2 course doesn’t involve a traditional sit-down exam.

Your qualification includes coursework and practical tasks, with practical assessments taking place during the face-to-face training.

And that makes sense.

If you’re training to become a Gym Instructor, you don’t just need to know how to instruct an exercise.

You need to be able to demonstrate that you can do it.

What happens outside the two practical days?

The two days at the Academy are just one part of the qualification.

You’ll also complete your home study using your online learning resources, building your knowledge around areas such as anatomy and physiology, exercise planning, client consultations and principles of training.

Then you bring that knowledge into the practical environment.

That’s where the two sides come together:

Learn it.
Practise it.
Coach it.

So, what will you actually do on a gym instructor course?

By the end of the two days, you’ve done much more than simply attend a course.

You’ve spent time:

  • Using gym equipment
  • Demonstrating exercises
  • Coaching other people
  • Practising communication
  • Observing technique
  • Giving feedback
  • Adapting exercises
  • Putting your learning into practice
  • Completing practical assessments

And perhaps most importantly, you’ve had the opportunity to experience what being a Gym Instructor actually feels like.

You don’t just study to become a Gym Instructor.

You practise being one.

And that might be the moment when you realise:

“Actually… I could see myself doing this.”

If you’ve been thinking about getting into the fitness industry but aren’t quite sure what the first step looks like, a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification can give you the knowledge, practical skills and foundation to get started — and potentially progress onto becoming a Personal Trainer too.

The question isn’t just what could you learn?

It’s:

Could you see yourself doing it?
