Follow the Muscle Contraction

The easiest way to understand muscle contraction is to follow what happens from the initial signal through to the muscle producing force.

1. The Signal Arrives

A signal from the nervous system travels along a motor neuron towards the muscle.

When it reaches the neuromuscular junction, it causes the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine.

This starts the process that leads to muscle contraction.

2. Calcium Is Released

The signal travels through the muscle fibre and causes calcium ions to be released.

Calcium is important because it allows the contractile proteins inside the muscle fibre to interact.

3. Actin and Myosin Interact

Inside the muscle are two important proteins:

Actin
Myosin

Myosin has small projections called myosin heads.

When calcium is present, the myosin heads can attach to actin and pull the actin filaments.

This causes the filaments to slide past each other.

The muscle fibre becomes shorter and produces force.

This is known as the sliding filament theory.

4. ATP Provides the Energy

This process requires energy.

That energy comes from ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

ATP allows the myosin heads to attach, pull and then detach from actin so the process can continue.

So rather than simply remembering:

“Actin + myosin = contraction”

Think of the sequence:

Nerve signal → calcium release → actin/myosin interaction → ATP provides energy → force is produced

A Common Exam Trap

A common mistake is thinking that actin and myosin shorten during a contraction.

They don’t.

The filaments slide past each other, causing the sarcomere to shorten.

The actin and myosin themselves do not become shorter.

That small distinction can make a big difference in an exam question.

You don’t need to become a physiologist to coach effectively.

But understanding muscle contraction gives you a better foundation for understanding what happens during resistance training.

When a client performs a resistance exercise, their nervous system activates their muscles, muscle fibres produce force and energy is required to sustain the contraction.

It also helps you connect anatomy and physiology to other topics you’ll study, including muscle fatigue, energy systems and training adaptations.
