You might know the four chambers of the heart, but could you trace the complete journey of Blood flow through the heart, including the valves and major blood vessels?
That’s where anatomy questions can become a little more challenging.
Try this mock question:
Which sequence correctly describes the flow of oxygenated blood after it returns from the lungs?
- A. Pulmonary artery → right atrium → tricuspid valve → left ventricle
- B. Pulmonary vein → left atrium → mitral valve → left ventricle
- C. Pulmonary vein → right atrium → mitral valve → left ventricle
- D. Pulmonary artery → left atrium → tricuspid valve → left ventricle
Answer: B
The important thing here isn’t simply knowing the names of the chambers.
You need to understand where the blood is coming from, where it is going, whether it is oxygenated or deoxygenated, and which structures it passes through along the way.
Follow the Blood
The easiest way to understand the heart is to follow one drop of blood.
1. Body → Right Side of the Heart
Blood returning from the body is deoxygenated.
It enters through the vena cava and travels into the:
Right atrium → tricuspid valve → right ventricle
[NOTE: this is the right side of the heart, not your right as you look at the diagram]
2. Right Side → Lungs
The right ventricle pumps the blood towards the lungs.
It passes through the pulmonary valve and enters the:
Pulmonary artery → lungs
In the lungs, carbon dioxide is removed and oxygen is picked up.
3. Lungs → Left Side of the Heart
The now oxygenated blood returns to the heart through the:
Pulmonary veins → left atrium → mitral valve → left ventricle
4. Left Side → Body
The left ventricle then pumps the oxygenated blood through the:
Aortic valve → aorta → body
And the cycle starts again.
A Simple Way to Remember It
Right → lungs
Left → body
And remember:
Veins → towards the heart
Arteries → away from the heart
There’s a common exam trap here.
The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood, while the pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood.
The terms artery and vein describe the direction of blood flow, not how much oxygen the blood contains.
Why Does This Matter for Your Exam?
Instead of trying to memorise a long list of separate structures, connect them together.
Body → vena cava → right atrium → tricuspid valve → right ventricle → pulmonary valve → pulmonary artery → lungs → pulmonary veins → left atrium → mitral valve → left ventricle → aortic valve → aorta → body
Once you can follow that pathway, questions about the chambers, valves, vessels and oxygenated blood become much easier.
It also gives you a useful foundation for understanding what happens during exercise, including changes in heart rate, stroke volume and cardiac output.
