You don’t have to quit your job to become a personal trainer. You don’t have to hand in your notice, empty your savings account and hope your new career works out.
In fact, for many people, that would be the worst way to start.
If you’ve been thinking about a career change, you might already have a long list of reasons why becoming a PT isn’t possible right now.
You have bills to pay, families to serve, responsibilities… and you probably can’t just walk away from your current income.
But here’s the good news.
Your career change doesn’t have to happen overnight.
You can start alongside the life you already have
Becoming a personal trainer doesn’t have to be one big leap.
It can be a series of smaller steps.
You could keep your current job while you study.
Complete your Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification.
Gain experience.
Then progress to your Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification.
Once you’re qualified, you could start with a small number of clients alongside your existing work.
Then you can decide what happens next.
Maybe you want to build a full-time career in fitness.
Maybe you want to work part-time.
Or perhaps you discover that you love helping a particular type of client and want to specialise.
You don’t have to know the final destination before you start.
Your existing career isn’t wasted
One thing many career changers forget is that they aren’t actually starting from scratch.
Years of working with people, communicating, organising, solving problems and dealing with challenges don’t disappear when you change careers.
Those are skills you can take with you.
Your fitness qualification gives you the technical knowledge.
Your life and work experience gives you everything else.
You don’t have to make the decision today
Perhaps the biggest benefit of starting gradually is that you can find out whether personal training is actually right for you.
You can learn, gain experience, work with clients… and you can make a more informed decision about your future.
So don’t think of becoming a personal trainer as:
Job → quit → new career.
Think of it as:
Job → qualification → experience → options.
Your career change doesn’t have to happen overnight.
You just need to decide whether you’re ready to take the first step.
Not sure what that first step to become a personal trainer looks like?
You don’t have to work it all out on your own.
