Thyroid Gland Function: The Thyroid Furnace

Thyroid Gland Function: The Thyroid Furnace

The thyroid is one of our Endocrine glands. Endocrine is one of the topics covered in the level 3 anatomy and physiology exam.

What is the Thyroid Gland Function?

The Thyroid gland is butterfly shaped and wraps around the trachea (windpipe).

It regulates metabolism, or more specifically, it regulates the metabolic function of every cell in our body. Another main thyroid gland function is to regulate temperature.

Thyroid Gland Function: The Thyroid Furnace

Imagine the thyroid as a furnace. It is controlled by the pituitary gland that acts as a thermostat.

The pituitary gland identifies the temperature of the body, and if it’s too cold, it will send a signal to the thyroid to “heat up”. If the body is too warm, it will send a signal to the thyroid, to stop the heating and allow the body to cool down.

Thyroid Function – Hormones

The thyroid secretes the hormone thyroxine. Thyroxine plays a crucial role in heart and digestive function, metabolism, brain development, bone health, and muscle control. It affects almost all of the body’s systems, which means proper thyroxine levels are vital for health.
