3 reasons a Kettlebell course will boost your fitness career

A kettlebell course could make a massive difference to your fitness career, and not because you get another certificate, another qualification, but for three reasons that genuinely make a difference to you and your fitness business.

In this blog I’ll reveal these three reasons why a kettlebell course will boost your fitness career.

But first, I want to tell you how I got into Kettlebell training…

I was in my first full-time PT job, working in club, unlocking the club at 5am and locking up after hours past 10pm most days.

I had clients booked in back to back all morning (5 one-to-one sessions) and evening (5 one-to-one sessions). There was literally no more time before or after “work hours” that I could train clients, and I was turning clients away. << In hindsight its a pretty good problem to have.

Every PT in club was doing the same as me, picking up clients from spin and circuit classes, prowling the gym floor and waiting for word of mouth. Each Personal Trainer was fighting for space in the squat rack and scrabbling to find “new exercises” that would help them stand out.

This all changed when I made the decision to enroll in a kettlebell course and get qualified. It was a stretch to be able to justify the time out of the gym to go on the course, and also to put my hand in my pocket and find the cash to make it happen. I also had to travel 150 miles to the course, stay in a hotel for two nights and travel back. I’m not going to lie it was a big ask, but something deep inside said it would be worth the time and money investment.

I spent two days in the classroom, throwing around lumps of metal, bruising my wrists, getting savage DOMS and lifting the bar on my coaching A-Game.

After the Kettlebell course…

Someone on the course recommended I run a small kettlebell class for PT clients at my current gym, and my imagination started to run wild. Bearing in mind that 10 years ago there was no terminology of “semi-private PT”, this was a totally new concept for me, for the gym and my clients.

Within 2 weeks of the course, I was already using Kettlebells in one-to-one PT sessions and had drafted out the bare bones of my new classes.

But there was a problem, when I pitched it to the gym manager, he was having none of it and in no uncertain terms told me that I WAS NOT ALLOWED to do this new class in club as it didn’t fit the club model.

Well, that was it, I’m not good at being told I CAN’T do something, so…

I set my class up in the public car park right outside the gym and using a local park. It was direct competition to the gym and literally in their back garden.

It blew up, I booked out my first 4-week class bundle and the next one, and the next one. Clients from the gym would even leave their current PT sessions to join us in the car park.

In the first week, I went from serving just 10 one-to-one clients a day (5 in the morning and 5 in the evening) to working with 12 in one hit. I boosted my income by over £1000 a month, and finally had a consistent daily structure that I could fit around other clients.

Since the day I decided to enroll in the course, I anticipate having earned well in excess of £200,000 as a direct result of kettlebell training… meaning that kettlebell course was an absolute bargain for me.

A kettlebell course can change everything

Becoming a Kettlebell instructor is a great career move to top-up your income with regular and consistent classes, just like I did all those years ago. But the benefits of kettlebell training go far beyond income alone… Check out the 3 top ways a kettlebell course will boost your fitness career

3 reasons a kettlebell course will boost your fitness career

1. Additional Regular Income:

Whether your day job is in an office or as a personal trainer, instructing kettlebell classes can be a great regular income on the side. The fitness industry is renowned for having an unreliable income every month (especially with PAYG PT sessions). There are two ways a kettlebell course can boost your income:

FREELANCE :

Some kettlebell instructors will be contracted on a freelance basis for regular classes each week. A traditional class will pay between £20 – £60 per class depending on the area, and club policies.  Because of this excellent hourly rate, you only need between 4 and 10 classes to pay-off your initial kettlebell instructor course investment.  It can be reassuring to know that as a PT you can earn a regular and consistent additional income alongside your day job.

This is great for fitness moonlighters, who have an entirely different day-job, but become fitness professionals before and after work – a great way to start a fitness career, without a big risky first step…. and there is certainly no rules that tie you into working for just one club.

YOUR OWN CLASS:

You read about it above, I have made hundreds of thousands of pounds over the years through teaching kettlebell classes and setting them up in a “bootcamp” or “class package” format.

Each package was different but they always had the client’s goal at the forefront and took a single monthly fee for a package that included kettlebell classes, nutrition, and accountability. It worked… and that’s why so many clients stayed with me year after year and got results.

I teach this method as part of our Level 1 Kettlebell Instructor Course, with a workshop solely focused on integrating kettlebells into a profitable fitness business.

We run this kettlebell course 2-3 times every year, our next course is on Saturday 16th November 2019 in Milton Keynes, and is just £139.

2. More PT clients:

Kettlebell classes and circuits/boot camps that use kettlebells create a “buzz” and an energy like no other class. There is something about the versatility, the power, the physical demand and the feeling of throwing around lumps of metal that make your clients feel invincible.

This creates a Raving Fan Culture. A culture where clients will spread the word, tell their friends and never stop raving about how great you are.

sounds good hey?

Kettlebell classes are fantastic for upsells. As a personal trainer you know that getting new client leads for personal training sessions can be hard work.

However, it is easier to sell a commitment to a class/ bootcamp/ circuit where they can get a result (A win) with less of an investment. Then you can “cherry-pick” your ideal clients for one to one personal training. This is a really stable business model where you have lots of clients paying a smaller amount, and then fewer clients paying a larger amount (imagine a pyramid with a large base). And because it is so stable you can add more clients easily without getting burned out.

Setting up a kettlebell class will give you class upon class with these lovely clients and allow them to see that you meet their needs. So, as long as you reflect these needs in your PT service and personality, there is no reason why these guys won’t be begging for PT sessions with you.

3.More employable:

There are a whole host of CPD courses that can make you more employable when searching for a secure job. Alongside Circuit Training, and Indoor Cycling, a kettlebell course is one of the most valued CPDs according to fitness managers and health club chains.

It’s not just the certificate, but regular CPD training like a Kettlebell course will show that you seek regular improvement of your coaching skills and are looking to always be the best trainer you can be.

You will also learn valuable coaching skills on a kettlebell course, that will accelerate your confidence, planning and group control beyond what you learned at level 2 gym and level 3 PT.

As an employed fitness instructor or even a full-time PT, this additional CPD will help you shine alongside other candidates. Your managers may ask you to deliver sessions on shift, which adds loads of variety to your day and a chance to meet prospective new clients.
